- doesn't. USR did not "admit" it, they admitted it plainly, sans
- quotes, saying that some systems (whether this refers to modems or
- computers) have the problem and they are looking at it. Whether you
- want them to announce it from their factory with a formal press
- conference before you consider it valid, I don't know. I have also
- received e-mail confirming the problem from several other users. Try
- USR tech support (if you can get a response) and ask them if there is
- a known problem with 28.8 Vi Sportsters at 57K. This beats a whole lot
- of testing on your sample of one. Your "symptoms," by the way, are
- that the modem echoes characters at this speed but does not respond to
- AT commands at all except for maybe one in 3 times. The problem
- appears in all modes (fax, data, and voice).

- I first suspected my software (I tried Delrina WinComm and QL) until I
- threw my old Sportster 14.4K on and everything worked great at 57K. I
- then went direct to the comm port with debug and found the same
- result.

- This is still no excuse for the 3-6 week lead times to get a response
- out of USR tech support if you get one at all. Spend some time reading
- the Smith and USR support BBSes while you are testing... You'll find
- out that I'm not the only one experiencing these problems.

- No, I'm not a USR hater, as my past modems were USR and I was very
- happy with them and the support. Not so this time.
